Libertarians!

Post by Jonathan »

Everything about my political ideas indicates I am strongly little 'l' libertarian. The big 'L' Libertarian Party, though, never ceases to amaze me with their fucktard ideas.
Badnarik feels that aid to the poor should be handled entirely by charities, with no government involvement at all and no taxpayer money used. He would cut taxes (by a lot) and hope that everyone would use the extra money to fund charities.
They sound like objectivists.

Anyway, I laughed at the part where Badnarik hopes that everyone would fund charities. That's good policy.

"What, terrorists are attacking America? I sure hope they stop that!"

Hmm, I fail to see how even as a "little l" you would disagree with that stance. What beliefs do you have? Government shouldn't be that big? What is something that is clearly not something that the government should do that it is doing?

On the other hand, as someone who is not a libertarian, I do not want to defend the position that the government should be able to do literally everything, such as invade arbitrary countries for arbitrary reasons, or violate basic laws of physics.

Governments shouldn't be telling people they can't get married just because they're gay.

I disagree with that Libertarian stance because I think governments are formed for the safety and protection of their people. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness makes perfect sense to me. When the shit hits the fan, I want the government to provide food and shelter to everyone who needs it. Otherwise, the government is derelict in its duty to protect the Life of its people. Doesn't matter if the feces in question is a hurricane, an abusive husband, or alcoholism.

Badnarik's other solution is to return the American dollar to a gold or silver standard. Although doing so is probably not possible, and most economists would say the results would be disastrous, Badnarik thinks it would prevent Congress from creating "money out of thin air."
