Why did he have a metal head, and why/when did it go from silver to gold? I seem to recall something about Cobra Commander smacking him up somehow, and then buying him a gold head as an "I'm sorry" gift. George, didn't you "research" GI Joe in McGill?

It was just an ancestral mask, not his whole head. The gold one showed up when the Iron Grenadiers line of toys came out. The brochures for the toys said that Destro has broken off from Cobra and formed his own army--the Iron Grenadiers.

I suspect that the color change was just something that the toy designers thought would look cool. It was never justified in the comics that I read (though I didn't read the ones from that time period), and it didn't show up in the cartoons. I didn't buy any of the Iron Grenadiers toys new, so I never saw the file cards to see if they explained it.

I had gold Destro, and various Iron Grenadiers things. They were awesome. I never had the classic silver head Destro though. I always thought that it was his whole head, because on the toy it certainly was!
