Just once

Post by Alan »

I want to walk into a room filled with people, and they all stop what they're doing to look at me.

The room is silent, and then...

One person claps, slow and rhythmical.

Another person joins in, and soon the whole room is clapping rhythmically, and then someone messes up the cadence and the clapping turns into applause.

Just like in the movies! I wonder if that ever happens in real life.

Actually, that usually happens after the protagonist says something meaninful, often what noone else supposedly had the courage to say. I don't remember any movie where people started clapping when someone entered the room without saying anything first.

And no, I haven't seen it happen in real life.

I happened in Lucas!

That was because he almost died playing football and it was the first day he came back to school from the hospital.

Yes I watch the dumbest movies on TV. Lucas was pretty good for a teen angst movie. I think it's an 80s movie.

I don't think those claps are usually after somebody says something. I think it's more like when they do something really dumb that ends up being good. Like tripping over a chair in the cafeteria and spilling an entire tray of food, but it lands directly on the biggest bully in school. So he gets all mad, but then all the other kids think it's great, so they start their rhythmic clapping, and then the special ed kids throw it off, and everyone applauds while carrying the tripping kid away on their shoulders, and the bully runs away crying revenge.

Well, the specific example I remember is Revenge of the Nerds, where one of the nerds talks about how its ok to be a nerd. Then someone in the crowd yells out "I wore thick glasses", and another yells "I played D&D", and then they're all cheering.

I know that's not clapping, but I can't remember any of the movies or TV shows where I saw the clapping specifically. I am sure that I've seen the clapping under similar circumstances.
