Damn, Doom3 has a large memory footprint. Oh well, eventually we'll have 1Gig of cache and 1TB of RAM. I wonder what sorts of programs will utilize all that much memory other than databases...
Also interesting is how much the on die memory controller suppresses the need for more cache. Maybe we won't need 1Gig of cache eventually.

i read that anaanananda article too.
I got bored and decided to figure out how much a decent Doom3 system would cost.
Athlon 64 3500+mb & 1Gb ddr
6800GT
decent case, hd, etc
is about 2k

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

Played the first level last night because my wife went out and bought it for me. At 3.0 GHz and 350 MHz, the game was choppy at 1600x1200 high quality. I went to 3.58 GHz and 360 MHz and the framerate was better, but I had a glitch in the sound. Eventually the game froze. I cranked it down to 3.56 GHz and the sound glitch went away and it's been happy ever since.
Compared to the first level of Call of Duty, it measures up pretty well. Among the differences: CoD gave you planeloads of guys to start out with, but in Doom you're all alone. Doom is far more likely to mess with the environment. Stuff likes to explode, move, and crumble. The pace is faster than CoD but slower than original Doom or Serious Sam. Doom 3 has a bit of a survival horror edge to it, as well. CoD is more of an adrenaline-pumping scene, whereas Doom'll make you jump, jump.
I have a serious obsession with corpses. I shoot every corpse I find now to see if it moves. I also have a paranoia about my back. On more than one occasion I've spun around only to get smacked from the front where I should be looking anyway.
I daresay I'm less jaded, having not played every FPS that came out since 1998. Anyway, I'll let you know what I think about it in two weeks when I'm halfway through.
