We saw this the other week. It's okay. It lacked the impact of, say, Spiderman, or even X-Men. I liked the characters and the action, but the plot didn't do enough to make it seem compelling or urgent, even though we're talking about the end of the world here. It's funny, but not a comedy like Shangai Noon or MIB. Definitely not franchise material.

I realized now what its problem is. It doesn't fit any of the superhero archetype plots. There's no coming of age, no awakening powers, no turn from good to evil or vice-versa, no fear or respect from the common man. I get the sense that maybe some of these themes are in the comic and tried to surface in the movie, but they made it too light to really take on any of them.

I don't regret paying to see it in the theater, but I might have waited until it came out on Starz anyway. Still haven't seen Master and Commander. It's probably out of all the theaters now, though.

Master and Commander is on DVD so I'd be pretty surprised if it's still in any theatre.
