ack, a furry! blah, i have no idea what i want to play. i don't even want to look into it.VLSmooth wrote:Hmm... definitely looking at Mithra, probably thief/blk mage, with a little monk for hp until lvl 30. Then it's ranger/ninja and maybe samurai ass-kicking
So, who's for starting in Windurst? (I want a ring!)
I'll probably go Red Mage/Black Mage (or White Mage).
I'm leaning toward RM/BM (or WM) because it's hybrid...ness is a bit like a class I've played before (and enjoyed) in DAOC. But despite its hybrid...ness it still has a main function, basically debuffs. I've found that hybrid classes that do have a useful main function get groups very easily compared to any class besides a healer (and defensive main tank, depending on how popular those are).
It seems like you need to buy arrows as a Ranger, so the best subclass for that would probably be thief so you get extra cash, at least early on. From what I've read it seems like it's a bad idea to have an advanced class as your subjob in most cases, don't know why. I think it has to do with the fact that advanced jobs are extremely specialized or something, not sure. However I do think Ranger/Ninja was one exception.
But by the time we are able to get an advanced job I'm sure we'll know a hell of a lot more about the game and will be able to make these kinds of decisions.
The best soloing class looks to be the beastmaster, pet classes usually are the best at that.
I need to stop reading about FF XI or I'll end up buying it on Tuesday and fail my exam on Wednesday.

Based on the fact that I've seen only one negative post about FFXI that didn't mention anything specific, and that the few preliminary reviews have been positive, I think it's pretty safe to say that we'll be playing this game in the near future.
Compared with the huge amount of negative stuff I read about SB and SWG I think this is a positive sign.

I think that summoners are basically pet classes, but their pets don't last forever, they need mana for upkeep.Dwindlehop wrote:Speaking purely from FFT experience, I may look into DK or Samurai, if no one else wants to tank. Otherwise, I'd be all over a Summoner.
No one is buying or playing this game on launch! No one!
DK/Samurai seems to be good. Basically any tank class with Samurai sub seems good, because of the TP gain ability or something.
And I'm also ideologically opposed to playing a MMORPG at launch. Even though everything's been positive so far we should wait to see how everything pans out when it goes live.
Yep, that's what I was saying to Vinny. With 5 people it'll be near impossible to set aside more than one time per week to play together. Since we only get one character the sub job system lets us play on our own and still be able to play together when we can.Dwindlehop wrote:You realize the thing about this game: we can all have just one character and play them as much or as little as we want, as long as we have similarly leveled subs. If Vinny becomes 30 Thief before I hit 15, we can still level together if he levels Monk or whatever.
I think we should definitely join a guild ("linkshell") together, eventually. Ideally a large, stable guild but one where people actually talk to one another. In DAOC at least those criteria were usually diametrically opposed for some reason.

From what I can tell, levelling seems to be like DnD3E (don't quote me on that). Since the highest level is 65 (don't quote me here either), you can have a max of 65 job levels, distributed as you see fit.
However, the whole sub issue confuses me. I thought some (passive) abilities transferred (at least stats, a la FF5) during a job change. Any clarification would be appreciated

Okay, the limiting factor is that you can only equip one job and one sub at a time. The level cap for every job is 70. Your sub job is equipped at half-level. So if you have level 70 in everything, at any one time you can only equip a 70 main and a 35-equivalent sub. Of course, you're extremely flexible since you can change what jobs you equip when you want to (I think you have to be at your house to switch jobs. Don't quote me on that.)
The jobs you don't have equipped have no effect. If you are a level 70 Warrior, but have 18 BM equipped as your main and 5 THF as your sub, you are gonna be one pansy ass glass cannon. You have to equip the sub to get any benefit. But, once you equip the sub, it's exactly like your main, only at half level.

Pre-ordered it yesterday, so I'll have the game for sure (well unless I press cancel order now). Might or might not activate an account right away since I would prefer not to waste the free month just in case I'm really busy this coming month. We'll see.Alan wrote:I was talking to Paul, he mentioned that he was considering getting FF XI.
Maybe signing in next time would be a good idea...heh, and yes I'm quoting myselfAnonymous wrote:Pre-ordered it yesterday, so I'll have the game for sure (well unless I press cancel order now).
