Book Recommendations: Song of Ice and Fire

Just out of curiosity, has anyone read the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R. R. Martin? A co-worker recently recommended it to me.

About ~4 years late, but I finished the first book over the winter holidays. Good read, I'll turn this into a spoilers thread soon enough. I'm avoiding the older thread that was listed spoilers since it likely covers the next two books.
