.xxx domain

Post by bob »

So, thoughts on the .xxx top level domain?

I think it's a good idea, if it gets critical mass of pornographers behind it. Sure, there's the possibility that kids will sneak onto that darked side of the web, but isn't it really better to have it all contained in one area anyway? If you want to block adult content, just block *.xxx, and that should do a pretty good job. I'm sure browsers will have that password protected filter built in soon enough. And if you do want porn, well it's still just as easy to find as ever.

I am of course ignoring the details (small fraction of people?) where you have problems like "kids hack the family computer" and "there's still porn on the rest of the web".

But seriously, can't I just find a software serial number without being assaulted by tits (not the birds)?

Except that most porn sites aren't going to give up their existing .com names. Also, I've heard porn ads pay better than normal ads, so people who are just trying to make money are still going to have them. Also, I've heard the .xxx domain is going to have requirements about not doing business with spammers. So, at best, the "reputable" porn sites (assuming such exist) would move to .xxx, but the fly-by-night sites based in someone's garage wouldn't be willing to move.

I think what we will see is the larger dedicated porn sites will use the .xxx domain and still have their mispelled .com domains to redirect the traffic. Also they would still advertise on normal sites. The smaller sites are probably not going to bother.

I don't really see what's the fuss is all about. If a kid is going to look for that stuff parent are not going to be able to stop them. I mean how many of you didn't look for porn material all over the house/neighborhood at 15? Kids have been looking for porn before internet came along...

Yeah, it's unenforceable, because it takes a court to determine what really is pornography. I really doubt most prurient content will find its way to .xxx. For this reason, it's a don't care for me.

Yes, there's software out there to access serial sites directly so you don't have to use your web browser. Also, is it really so hard to use IRC for all your serial needs? Hell, I bet usenet has tons of serials too.

If there's interest, I can tell you how I find serials on IRC real easy.
