laptop weight

Engineering computing gave me a choice between 4.5lbs.@1400x1050 and 5.3lbs.@1600x1200. I decided at 3lbs., I choose thin & light, but at >4lbs. I'm all about the resolution.

I don't think weight matters much when you get down to around 5lbs or maybe 6lbs. Do you tote your laptop to and from work every day? Also, was the screen the same size for both even though the resolutions are different?

My old Inspiron was just too heavy to be truly used like a laptop. With both batteries, it weighs in at 9 or 10lbs, both of which are basically useless now since they each hold about 5 minutes worth of charge these days. It's still a good desktop replacement still.

1400x1050=14.1"
1600x1200=15"

That accounts for the weight difference.

I used to take my laptop home nights. I don't much anymore. My current laptop weighs around 5 pounds. I haven't weighed it exactly. I might take the new one home some since it will support WPA.

I think there are probably three phases of usage: 10 lbs, leave in one place al the time; 5 lbs, take with you occasionally; 3 lbs, carry everywhere. But maybe there are only two and 5 & 3 are the same.

Doh. Revised numbers.

1400x1050=5.5lbs
1600x1200=6.25lbs

Nothing good is true.

I think if the 1400x1050 was still 4.5, I'd choose that over the 6.25@1600x1200. But 5.5 is heavy, no matter which way you look at it. But with drive, maybe extra battery, and AC adapter, the 1600x1200 is gonna be heavy.

Well if you're just taking it between home and work I don't think the weight makes too much of a difference.

If you're going to use for traveling that's different. Anything much more than 5 lbs will get annoying, especially with extra batteries, an external CD or DVD drive, and the AC adapter. I don't think either of the two are real travel-y laptops - more like stow in the overhead compartment with your carry-on luggage laptops than put-under-the-seat personal item laptops.

Couldn't you make some kind of disability claim and demand a lighter laptop?

Or better still, wait a while, then make a worker's comp claim. You can say you received back and knee injuries from carrying the laptop arround. I'm sure Alan would be willing to be act as your expert medical witness.

The standard IT laptop is 1024x768 and weighs 4.5 pounds. I can have that one if I want it. I really do prefer the higher resolution when it comes to work. It's non-work laptop activities that suffer when the damn thing weighs 6.25 pounds.
