Antivirus software

Post by George »

The other thread got me thinking about antivirus software. I'm ready to buy an up-to-date antivirus program, and I wondered what you guys recommend.

I've historically used Norton, first because I got it free at CMU and later because one of the motherboards I bought came with a free copy. However, the free copy's CD is defective and no longer readible, so I figure its time for something new. Norton's become pretty badly bloated over the past few years. I also have no idea about how effective it is. The only time I've ever seen it detect a virus was when someone put one in my dropbox at CMU.

Things I'm looking for:
-Small memory/CPU footprint.
-Integrated virus definition updates. I'm too damn lazy to do anything more than click a button or two, so no manual zip-file downloads.
-Free virus definition updates for the foreseeable future. Norton's updates are only free for the first 90-days, as I recall. Reinstalling resets the time, but the entire point of buying the software is so that it's legal to use.
I feel like I just beat a kitten to death... with a bag of puppies.

AVG has a free antivirus software that's what I use before I upgraded to SP2. It has automatic update and stuff, but I am not sure how much memory it uses.

I am currently using CA's internet security thingy, or the antivirus part of it at least for the SP2 internet security station. The first year is free, and I will decided on what I want to do after the year is over. Maybe AVG will have integrated with SP2 features.

Actually I just checked and it does seem to offer SP2 integration now (wasn't there when SP2 is out).

I still use NAV although I think I'm supposed to uninstall it now that I'm not at CMU...

I lost interest in the seamingly 'heavy' AVG, and have been extremely happy with 'Anti-Vir.' not only is it free for non-commercial duders, but its easy to download, has a great update wizard, utilizes modular sections of subprograms, offers constant read/write supervision, the imagery is nice, and the main files scanning program is dubbed 'luke filewalker.' I have never experianced any problems with it, although my dad had some issue where his mcafee firewall gave the active guard section trouble. mcafee blizos anywho so we disabled it.

http://www.free-av.com/ is the link to anti-vir

also you might consider online scanners, though something about sending all my data accross the webbernet sounds kinda wrong. ur call:

Also, i remember installing antivir on my grrrly's cpu after she had used norton for a long while. And boom Anti-vir picked up 20+ trojans that norton never saw. go figure
sometimes you feel like a butt..
