When the winds come from the east, we can smell the smoke and the air quality is so bad that the government recommends we limit our outdoor activities. Mostly our wind comes from the west, but geez.

Well, right now the air quality is "Unhealthy" which still means limiting outdoor activity but the previous time this happened it was "Very Unhealthy."
On the downside, the wind has been blowing steadily from Canada for days. Cool your shit, Canada.

At least you're not in the part of Texas where the forecast was 50" of rain within a few days?Jonathan wrote:Weather forecast for today: 87 degrees, Smoke.

You're complaining as if Canada was protesting Trump by setting itself on fire.

WHAT PROOF DO WE HAVE THAT THEY DIDN'T
Re: My world is on fire
The NY Times has a feature comparing how much rain Houston has gotten with average rainfall in your area. Houston has had 6 years worth of San Diego rainfall in the past week.

Some kid set off some fireworks in the Columbia River Gorge.

Nice, artisanal, local American fires. Like God intended!
Air quality index is back up to "Unhealthy". Not far from "Very Unhealthy!" We have a little light ashfall Monday but no real accumulation.

Hoping the local kids get a fire day from school? The Portland area, meanwhile, saw up to an inch of ash from the fires.

If you want to see the data in real time:

Looks like China may be better off than Portland... Or is it:

Qiu Qihong, an engineer of the Beijing Environmental Monitoring Center, said US and China use the same function to determine AQI figures from six different pollutants. However, he explained that the UStates uses a stricter system to determine what numbers to plug into the AQI formula. The formula requires a range of values of PM2.5 to calculate the number, and the US and China are using different ways to determine this range.

Re: My world is on fire
You're welcome. Luckily, the bay area's micro climate has been pushing all the ash up and over us, so the air quality hasn't been as bad... We have orangy/hazy skies though which are kinda weird looking.Jonathan wrote:This time we're importing our ash from California...

Yeah it's hazy as shit still this far north. Harder to smell, though.

I was in SC last Thursday and you could see blue sky overhead. This I guess is something else?

The cold air in the bay area keeps the smoke either high up or even pushes it east.Jonathan wrote:Well, shit. Maybe I can blame Canada again? My eyes are stinging.

Just casually staring at the sun today because the haze is so thick. I believe this is courtesy of southern Oregon? It's exhausting keeping track.
On the plus side, it's been a great summer for strawberries.

Couple photos outside my office about 90 minutes before sunset.
No cloud cover or mist today. Just... smoke.
