Apparently the new Nvidia driver was Valve pointing out all the suck in the Linux driver, and Nvidia went, "Yeah, ok."

Anyway, Steam on Linux is a major strategic push for Valve to get into the living room and supplant Windows and PS4 and XBox as platforms of choice.
