pink lagoons....

Post by Vyrosama »

Found the article about pig farming...long read...but interesting (dunno how accurate it is today though)

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/st ... _polluters

To summarize:
A lot of pig shit is one thing; a lot of highly toxic pig shit is another.
Found this more amusing than tragic:
In another instance, a worker who was repairing a lagoon in Michigan was overcome by the fumes and fell in. His fifteen-year-old nephew dived in to save him but was overcome, the worker's cousin went in to save the teenager but was overcome, the worker's older brother dived in to save them but was overcome, and then the worker's father dived in. They all died in pig shit.

Interesting read. It's from two years ago; what makes you think conditions have changed?
I run into a few local guys who had made the mistake of accepting jobs in hog houses, and they tell me that you just have to wait the smell out: You'll eventually grow new hair and skin.

A quick scan of PETA's website seems like nothing major has changed...hmm...I guess it was wishful thinking that the article could have sparked some activist movement to enforce change at Smithfield or maybe some technological advance would improve the process resulting in less waste (etc.)...
