Jason Miao wrote:Seriously, that’s one failing of Hollywood. Hollywood doesn’t tell grand stories. They either cut TV shows off too soon or they let them fester and rot and milk them to death. Anime, because production is planned out years in advance, can have a fully encapsulated story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Do you think a story as complete as Gurren Lagann could ever be dreamed up by Fox? I mean, “Hey, I have this great idea for a TV show. It runs for exactly 24 episodes, and, after that, the story is finished so we don’t have to make anymore!” Do you think that will ever get green lit over “Hey, let’s make yet another CSI knockoff! We’ll kill off hookers and druggies for the next seven years! We’ll make millions in syndication!”

Anyone better versed in TV fandom care to challenge or support that quotation?

This is in response to the recent hilarious MSNBC anime interpretation, Anime erotic subculture goes mainstream, which has made significant ripples in the anime blog community.

British television operates on the same limited number of episodes as the author says anime does. US TV thinks you're packing it in early if you finish after five seasons. I'm not really conversant with the economics involved.

what exactly is the problem the anime blogging community has with the MSNBC article? It oversimplified things but I don't see how it's necessarily inaccurate.

Play and fantasy are more important than actually having sex with a real person.

I remember the insane amount of negative feedback from that.

Google Search "japanese birth rate"

Time to see if the search results change over time.

Found it (not a prime minister though, maybe this isn't the same person?)

Hakuo Yanagisawa

In January 2007 he drew criticism for describing women as "birth-giving machines" and "baby making devices" in a speech on the falling birthrate of Japan. [1][2] He said later "it was extremely sound to have more than two children". [3]

"The number of women between the ages of 15 and 50 is fixed. The number of birth-giving machines (and) devices is fixed, so all we can ask is that they do their best per head," Yanagisawa reportedly said. The minister later apologized and retracted his remarks.

Not quite related but I read that the gender imbalance that exists in China with lots of young adult males than female means they better start a war soon to fix it!
