-for some odd reason, all this made me think of the keyboard that vinny use to have (back in the day) and the plastic covering that he'd put over it to keep it safe from dust except it would turn strange colors and seemed kinda sticky....

It was a Gatway 2000, 124-key "Anykey" programmable keyboard

The plastic cover was from some 3rd party OEM, whose name I forget.

As for it's current location, I'm not sure. I think I gave it back to relatives.

Despite the lack of programmability, I like my current keyboard much more:

Amber and I set up desks right next to each other. I need to get a silent keyboard (and maybe a silent optical mouse, if there is such a thing). I was thinking of heading down to the Office Depot around the corner and just seeing what they have, but if anyone has a real suggestion I'm glad to hear it.

My current keyboard is a boring Microsoft Internet Keyboard (I think?) that I scored free off my brother-in-law.

Having a split keyboard or not has been a non-issue for me, ergonomically. The key difference is proper desk and chair height. I went to a lot of trouble to get a decent setup at home.

Although the MS Natural Keyboard 4000 isn't touted as a silent keyboard, it's much quieter than any other keyboard I've used.

Others seem to agree as well:

It'd be in your best interest to give the 4000 a whirl if you haven't. It's remarkably comfortable.
