Get your email from Google. 1000 MB of storage, anyone?
Sweet Jesus. I think it goes without saying that I'll be getting one as soon as they're available.
This is at least 5 times better than my 200MB andrew mail quota! Probably more since I'd get to keep this one forever AND I can search my mail using google! It's things like this that make google rock so much.

One way to look at this would be that google is spending a dollar for every gmail user that fully utilizes the quota. It could be less if they don't mirror or use other data protection schemes and don't use cheap/slow drives.

I wonder if they'll let people send movies to each other through this service. I can envision a warez underground that passes along usernames and logins to gmail accounts. In a way, google is paying $1 for each movie/game and sharing them to the world

You know how some bands' songs all sound the same?

Well here's a pretty good example:

Nickleback songs:
Left channel: Someday
Right channel: This is how you remind me

How You Remind Me Of Someday

OMG, I've been complaining about these two particular songs since I first heard Someday for that very reason.

President Cohen sent out an email to the campus community about it too...
Jared L. Cohon wrote:April 5, 2004

Dear Members of the Community:

I write to condemn an irresponsible and unconscionable act that has created harm to all of our campus. The horrible cartoon in the April 1, 2004, edition of The Tartan is a repudiation of our core values and it must not be tolerated. I condemn the author for creating this cartoon and the editors of The Tartan for allowing this cartoon to run.

Civility and respect for others is one of the primary hallmarks of an educated person. This begins with our own community. While academic freedom ensures that we can exchange ideas and opinions freely, being an educated person means treating others with respect. In general, over the last few years especially, we have come to be a community that is inclusive, respectful, caring and compassionate. It pains me, therefore, that we have students here who would conceive of and publish such a thing, who could possibly believe something like this was funny or ironic, or who don't duly assume the full thrust of responsibility that they have as leaders of a student newspaper.

I have focused on the blatantly racist cartoon directed at African Americans, but, in fact, much of the April 1 issue was hateful and offensive to women, gays and lesbians, Hispanics and other individuals. This entire piece is an affront to all people of conscience and diametrically opposed to the firmly held values and beliefs of this community. We have worked together to make Carnegie Mellon a diverse and welcoming community and a safe place. As we condemn the acts of a few, whether thoughtless or malicious, we must commit ourselves to sustained engagement and involvement to ensure that the voice of reason and respect is heard throughout the campus.

We are establishing a commission immediately, to include students, faculty, staff, and alumni to review this entire matter. This commission will report to Dean Murphy as to appropriate university action, including the potential for referral to the University Disciplinary Committee for individuals involved. Our objective is not administrative interference in the student newspaper, but to offer our student community the support necessary to ensure that an informed, autonomous and responsible student voice is heard, and that the core values of this institution are affirmed in the context of serious and responsible student journalism. The steps that we take will ensure respect for thoughtful and appropriate decision making and will be in the best interests of our students and
community.

Sincerely,

Jared L. Cohon

http://spacemoose.almostdead.net/clobber/index.htm

For an old-school, Canadian look at student comics and controversy, have a look at this unofficial archive of the saga of Clobberin' Time.

Sadly, Bob's comic is not as funny as Space Moose. Unless, perhaps, there's some context I'm missing. Even assuming "Pearl Necklace" supposed to be making fun of Pearls Before Swine, I don't know any of the characters well enough to make a connection.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that they'll cap the size of each individual attachment to something small, on par with Hotmail and Yahoo. That way, they cut down on copyright infringement and bandwidth costs.

Oh, I thought a bit more about what google might do with their mail server... They'll probably write the most awesomest spam filter ever and throw in a kitchen sink so that no one else will be able to compete in the webmail market.

Heh, we've already discussed this at work, and came to the same size limit per e-mail conclusion. Although the hardcore will probably start splitting and spanning (floppy sized rars anyone?)

It's a good way to get extremely large permanent storage, so I think it's very likely. Of course, they wouldn't be able to get 3x1 compression of the rars so maybe it would start to take up a sizeable chunk of their petabyte of storage (or NOT).
