A recent study by online house-pricing service Zillow.com found that less expensive houses appreciate more than costlier and presumably larger homes. If that continues, the ubiquitous McMansion may turn out to be the real estate bubble's biggest booby prize.

I think that makes sense in high population density areas where the land is more valuable than the house. Houses themselves tend to decrease in value over time just like cars unless you invest in things like paint, carpet, energy efficient anythings (windows, water heaters, solar panels, etc...), etc...
