the auction is a GREAT idea that works very well.
(most items mentioned are from bastok region)
basically you can buy just bout anything you want provided someone is selling it. questitems, weapons, armor, all at cheaper prices than the actual stores.
you should be able to buy commonly seen armor and weapons for at least 50% off the NPC vendors. never ever buy anything at the weapons/armor store before checking the auction.
when selling, always look at the history. If lots of ppl sold stuff recently at a certain price, always price around it. never sell crystals at a store. (they sell for 14 each) always save up into bags of 12 and then auction off for 1000 gil or so. (high lvl ppl buy them for crafting, etc) other random items sell pretty sell too such as goblin mail/mask/armor, etc
Quest items: they are also sold here as well. If you're lazy, just buy the item here if someone is selling it.
Items that you'll fine early levels and shouldnt sell:
any crystals
zinc+ ores
goblin stuff
instead auction them! these are all higher lvl crafting stuff, those rich japanese ppl will want
(im sure if we play ffxi long enough, we'll be buying these at these prices lol)

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.
small addendum:
unless you need money ASAP, just be patient and wait for the auction stocks to go down, and the price to go back up. consider the japanese peak time, whenever that is. That's when the majority of them are buying out all the auction houses hehe. tho earth/wind crystals may take a few days yet. at least fire crystals are back up! =]
or you can buy low sell high! Just copnsider what the "average level" of the US population is and think about what items are considered "good" in the near future. I bought a Justice Badge for 300, and then auctioned it off for 2000.
