Tip #1: Install the game while having dinner or a book to read or a TV show to watch or surfing the net or whatever you can come up with. This is one game with the LONGEST registration process and the LONGEST patch download and the LONGES patch installation.

Tip #2: Don't hit that cancel button unless you're bored.

Tip #4: Immediately reconfigure your keyboard, set it to "compact".

From main menu, go right (or left) to:

Config -> Misc 2 -> set keyboard to compact.

It's SOOOOOO much easier once you do this. Unless you have a PS2 style controller it's pretty tough to control.

my only tip is to.... RUN! if you see you're doing less dmg/rnd than the baddy and missing more. dont even wait until half hp hehe

oh, and since we all in Bastok probably, run from any lizard.

but most importantly, check the enimies before engaging ifthey are your "level" all the baddies aint the same sometimes u will be able to say, rape a vulture in 3 hits, but then the next one owns u.

What's the consensus? Keyboard or gamepad? I actually have a DualShock hooked up to my machine via USB so I can get that PS2 experiahnce (said with French accent for emphasis).

..had to help someone with painting all freaking afternoon, finally getting around to installing and patching. ugh. hour to go..

To keep your chat window from disappearing, go to Config->Windows and turn off Reactive windows, and set min lines to 7.

If you start out as a mage, be sure to use the scroll in your pack to learn your first spell.

And after you level up to be able to use a certain spell you need to buy scrolls. I wish you can just learn the spell after you reach a certain level rather than having to go to a store. Another foreseeable problem is that once you get tons of spells you'll need to scroll up and down to get the right spell during combat. Maybe that's when a gamepad is good.

Once you have a ton of spells, set up macros for the spells you use the most. I learned that much, at least, from reading FAQs.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/16968.html

Go to Macro Guide.

Ok, before I force myself to pass out to go to work early, I just wanted to ask if power leveling is possible.

For example, if a lvl1 tags along in a group of higher lvl characters, will its experience be reduced? I'm especially interested in the case of advanced classes, since you'll be forced to start at lvl1 again. It could suck having to go back to easy areas, even if your old main might've been lvl70.

Also, I'd hate to make people wait for me if I'm lower level ^_^;

Not sure about this actually, maybe Paul would know since he was playing with his friend who was lower level than him.

They have made it that power lvling is not possible. Take the example from today. Dave (lvl 9), me (lvl 6) and nu (lvl 5) were in a party fighting monsters. when we gain exp, dave gets the most, and nu gets the least. And our level gaps weren't all that big. So imagine power lvling with higher lvl chars...I would say you get virtually nothing.

It's not that hard to lvl up very early on. It's after lvl 6-7 when you start getting cocky that things become harder :)

ahh that makes some sense. i only used my tp once in that battle against the bomb thingy that almost killed us hehe. Had to use my 2 hr skill and my 300% fast strike hehe.

so my guess as to what was going on last night....

me = 9
paul = 6
nu = 5

total is 20

if the baddie would give 100 xp, and there isnt a bonus (in ac2 there was a bonus, so 2 ppl would get like 65% of the solo kill, not sure about ffxi)

me = 45 xp
paul = 30 xp
nu = 25 xp

cuz when me and alan were just duoing around the steamy area, i'd be getting like 25-30 xp a kill, so not sure what's actually going on lol
