Friends List instructions
Playonline is your friend. Albeit a complicated friend that requires you study rocket science in order to have a conversation with it. In any case, I found out how the friend list works. It's actually managed outside of the game in the Playonline interface.
1. From the main Playonline screen, click on Navigator. After you exit various popup tool tips you'll come ot the main list, and the first item will say Friend List. Click on that.
2. Now if you want to invite somebody into your friend list click on the "friend search" (magnifying glass) icon on the right. Now Click on the arrow right of "index search" twice and you're in "profile search".
3. Type in a character name you see on this board under "character" and under World type in Valefor" then click on "search". Now that you've found that character on the right, and click on "send message".
4. Now you've got a delightfully happy message which threatens to rot your teeth but is unmodifiable. Go ahead and send over a request to be that persson's friend with the send button. It'll show up in their email later where they can accept you.
My character's name is Geldon. Go ahead and shoot me a bunch of invites, I'll add you. I sent an invite to many people's characters mentioned on this thread, check your in game email. I've already got Otho and Xonn (that buddy I was talking about) on my friend list.
The Friendlist can be viewed in game with /friendlist. There's no way to add friends from within the game (that I have found) but there's actually a function in FFXi to "temporarily" log out so you can access Playonline and shoot emails and whatnot. Pretty slick, actually.

The /befriend command will be added. By using the command (/befriend [player name]), PCs will be able to send the "Let's be friends" message to another PC, which asks them to join their Friend List.
