Disgaea: power gamer's dream (nightmare)
This game is PERFECT for vinny. I can see thousands of hours just to create one perfect save for this game. of course most of us don't care about that.
since FFT is the most well know I will use it as reference.
MANA:
I will start with mana since it's sort of like the "magic currency" of the game. Not to confuse mana with spell point, spell point is what you use to cast spell/use skill in battle and mana is what you use to do things outside the battle. You gain mana by killing creatures, each character have their own mana pool. The character that delivers the killing blow gets the mana, in the case of the combo the character that initialize the combo gets the mana. You can use mana to create new character, pass law in assembly, and other things I haven't figure out.
Character creation:
This works rather different than FFT. There are unique character and they have no class. You start out with 2 main character and 3 "prinnies." There are human classes and monster classes. You unlock monster classes by killing them in battle, the more you kill the less amount of mana it will require to create new monster.
Human classes works like FFT except you can't change class at well. You need to pass promotion exam to rank 3 (not level) and spend 100 mana + cost of creating new character to transmigate into a new class. New classes are unlocked after certain requirements are met.
Game play:
Think FFT + Saga Frontier. You can have up to 10 character on the field and you can swap them during battle.
Story:
It starts out kind of stupid, but just think it as anime and it's pretty funny.
Magic/Skill:
Mages learns magic, which are class specific. everyone (human class) can learn skills from weapon but different class have different learning speed for each weapon. You learn new skill by increase your weapon skill level, and increase your power by using that skill more/increase stats.
Magic are learned by leveling up, and power up the same way as skills. Also increase your staff skill increase magic power/range/area affected.
Items:
This is too evil for me to say anything about it. You can level up items, any item. if you have too much time on your hand you can level up gum that heals 40 hp to level 20 so it heals 100 hp (made up number).
Not sure whatelse I need to say, just ask here if you have any question.

I have no idea what is the max level for items.quantus wrote:Wow, you can level up items? Is there a max level? I can see how this could keep vinny entertained pretty close to forever unless there is no max level because then it will entertain him forever.
As for character the max level at any instance is 9999, the cumulative level (since the character starts at level 1 when you transmigrate) is something like 80000+ I think (read it somewhere).

Heh, people on Marybelle 3 have been playing Disgaea for a little while now. I remember recently seeing a crazy 540+ hit combo, with a massive spiral area of effect, being executed on a very "colorful" (psychedelic?) map.
What will Atlus think of next?
FYI: Atlus is the company behind Disgaea and FFT

For those that want more info, here's the obligatory Gameforms review of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Since I'm now playing this game, I have to say that it is awesome. I actually beat its predecessor, La Pucelle, which tells you a lot right there. Disgaea is even better, and I thought La Pucelle was already much better than FFT. And Phantom Brave looks like it'll be even better than Disgaea.
If you have a PS2 you should grab a copy of this while it's still available. Nippon Ichi are a bunch of geniuses.

The max level for items is 30, 60, or 100, depending on its rarity.
I leveled up some barbeque sauce to level 8. But that was to recruit its residents and also to get the bonus items from clearing each level.
And then I can level up those items, and get more items and residents from them.
This game is evil, but oh so good. I keep forgetting that there's the actual main story to do.

there is no main story, the whole point of the game is to become overpowering so that you can kill level 9999 uber prinny in one hit (somehow i don't think that's possible). hurry up and get to chapter 6, the best part of the gameAlan wrote:The max level for items is 30, 60, or 100, depending on its rarity.
