differences between roguelikes

Post by Jonathan »

I've been looking for links like these since forever.

What's the difference between Hacklike games and Bands?

What are the major roguelikes still developed today?

The reason I've been looking for this info is I want to play something like Castle of the Winds, but longer and better. Nethack, of course, is nothing like CotW, but is the most popular roguelike. Nethack is more puzzle-y than I like my RPGs, so I spent a considerable amount of time poring over alternatives without the benefit of the above links.

I have been very pleased with Troubles of Middle Earth. Compared to CotW (registered), it has deeper character customization and advancement, more towns, wilderness travel and combat, more quests, better items, niftier spells, and more combat depth, in addition to being quite long. The world and plot are better, too, thanks to Tolkien. There also seem to be a large number of advanced classes/races for after it gets boring. Graphical tilesets are compiled by default and it is available for Mac, Windows, Linux, etcetera. The only other comparable roguelike is ADOM, but that is not open source (and thus not available for my platform).

ToME does have perma-death enabled by default, which can be annoying. I need to figure out the cheat options so I can get around that.
