nwn questions
Do spells go as the character level or the class level? If I have a multiclassed level 9 fighter/level 1 wizard, will my Burning Hands do 1d4 or 10d4? If the answer is 1d4, what happens if both classes could cast the spell? Say I have a multiclassed level 9 ranger/level 1 cleric. Do my Cure Light Wounds heal 1d8+9, 1d8+10, or something else?
Arcane class levels and clerical class levels are additive to their respective spell classes. The case you brought up of ranger/cleric doesn't work since you'll have two slots of cure light. One for ranger and one for cleric. The result will be with respect to which one you cast.
To the best of my knowledge that is how it 'should' work. I have no idea how nwn handles it.

Actually, barring certain prestige classes, no classes ever combine their spellcasting level. As a result, multiclassing characters that focus on spellcasting is generally a bad idea. In pencil and paper D&D, they introduced a new feat that starts to fix the problem, but that was well after NWN was released so I doubt NWN has it.
In the ranger/cleric example, you'll be able to memorize one or more cure light wounds with your ranger slots and one or more with your cleric slots (or just spontaneously convert the cleric slots). The CLW in the cleric slot will cure 1d8+1 because your class level for that slot is 1. The ranger is a little different because I think they (and paladins) get a penalty to their caster level. I think its halved or -3 or something. Assuming halved, you would cure 1d8+4 with ranger slots. Note also that CLW caps at +5. I never played clerics, so I don't know the caps for the bigger cures; I'm sure Vinny could tell you.
However, I think NWN split spells by divine/arcane, not class, so it probably can't track which spell was memorized by which class. If that's the case, than it probably gives you the better of the two levels. However, it might treat it like specialist wizards and just assume the spells belong to the most restrictive list first.

I feel like I just beat a kitten to death... with a bag of puppies.
