Once tanks get good at aggro management (get taunts, other aggro building stuff like Paladin heals, etc.) it becomes very annoying when casters run around, because then the tanks have to run around too trying to chase the enemies to pull them off the casters.Dwindlehop wrote: When you're a caster and you get aggro, you run like a bitch while everyone else whomps or taunts and draws the hate off you.
Final Fantasy XI play thread
Yup 6 in a party, and 3 parties in an alliance. Thus 1 buyer + 5 passers is logical.VLSmooth wrote:Another quick question, world pass allows 5 uses, correct? How many are allowed to be in a party?
I'd hope six (one for the pass buyer, and five others that use it). I think I read about it somewhere, but I forgot the number and where I read it. Did I mention I'm lazy?
You kicked my dog!!!

Interesting, I wonder if "Until Nanami lit me on fire" was literal though (can you effect other PCs like that?)
Now, it's time for more questions!
If someone goes on a quest, is the target guaranteed to be there, or is camping involved? In general, are there inherent bottlenecks like this for FFXI?
More importantly, what about monster stealing? I remember reading that they'll be at least three colors for monsters (not engaged, engaged, engaged and party asking/pleading for help). However, I don't remember reading anything about those said monsters being yours if you don't ask for help.
Also, are there ridiculous "must get entire guild together to get one item" evercrack scenarios in FF XI?

It seems like high level items have some (fairly low) random chance of dropping. This is consistent with most MMORPGs to prevent rare items from becoming common. However I think quest items will always drop.
There are bosses that require an alliance (18 people) to beat. Not sure if any will require multiple alliances. In DAOC dragons and other "epic" bosses required up to 100 people to kill. Doesn't seem like there's anything like that in FF XI though.
EDIT: It also seems like AF (artifact) stuff always drops. This is also consistent with DAOC, where epic armor always drops. I never got my epic armor, because I got my spellcrafted armor (which is better) first. Heh.

my advice to any mages: Be an onion head! you will be more and more frustrated with having worse stats and stuff in comparison, and who knows, maybe the little guy will grow on you!
I'll probably just be a tank. AC2 spoiled me with is no-xp penalty for death and high soloability so I'll be a warrior/monk. Deciding on an advanced job is too early! but a pet dragoon must be cool!

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.
Yeah onion-heads are the best mages. But from what I read Hume and Mithra are better for Red Mages because Red Mages occasionally perform other roles besides just magic.
Also, in case I ever decide to try a melee job, I'd like to have that option open.
After seeing tons of screenshots I don't think Tarus look ridiculously ridiculous. Just kind of ridiculous.

Camping is only for the people who must absolutely have the very best items period exclamation mark.VLSmooth wrote:Reading some more of Alan's link reveals that camping is part of the game... argh...
Well, so long as it's enjoyable without camping, it's all good.
It's entirely possible to enjoy any MMORPG (except maybe EQ...don't know about that) without camping.

Hmm, only ~4970 with the new drivers. A little bit of sound corruption also snuck in (skipping), which is bothering me. I'll run the benchmark again later to put fears to rest.VLSmooth wrote:Btw, managed to get 4761 on Benchmark 2 in high-res (quality?) mode without rebooting.
I'll try installing new drivers and rebooting when I get home to see if I can boost that any
As for heat, my CPU went up to 42 degrees Celcius (strange, was 47 the first time, then again, the ambient was ~73 degrees fahrenheit, now it's ~66). Since my video card doesn't have a thermometer to my knowledge, I did a rough estimate by touching it. Luckily it's nice and cool, no doubt due to a 120 mm Panaflow blowing on it
