Hmm... seems I might be getting a free monitor, but I need to decide by 8 pm tomorrow at latest. Any (realistic) suggestions. I'm thinking up to $500.

Just got an update, I have $400 credit (combined with xmas gift) applied toward a monitor. The time deadline is to get it counted for taxes (payment for building / setting up computers). I have some flex, but it's preferred I get an answer quickly. Realistically, the deadline is the weekend.

17" LCD Contenders:
SAMSUNG 172X (
manufacturer |
newegg $409.00 )
SAMSUNG 173P (
manufacturer |
newegg $539.50 )
SAMSUNG 711T (
manufacturer |
newegg $429.00 )
19" LCD Contenders:
SAMSUNG 910T (
manufacturer |
newegg $464.99 ) <----- ?????
SAMSUNG 193P (
manufacturer |
newegg $732.00 )
Why is the 193P $200+ more than the 910T? Is it just because of 5 ms? Trying to figure out what MagicBright and MagicTune are now...
Edit: MagicBright Info ( link )

The SyncMaster 711t utilizes Samsung’s proprietary MagicTune software and MagicBright technology. MagicTune, a true launching pad for future technology, enables users to have full control over all display features with extensive color adjustment capability per an individual’s personal viewing criteria. This produces the best front of screen performance for the optimal personalized viewing experience. MagicTune allows users the ability to save the various personalized display profiles for whatever environment or mode the user is in. MagicTune gives users the ability to adjust the monitor’s various settings with a simple click of a mouse -- all of this functionality is completed with no additional cable or interface -- MagicTune communication is completed through the video cable. This is a more user-friendly and accurate method to adjust the display’s settings to each users own personalized preference and working environment.
Samsung has also incorporated its MagicBright technology into the new SyncMaster 711t. MagicBright allows users to change the brightness of the display to adjust to various applications with the simple push of one button. MagicBright offers settings for text computing, viewing video on the Internet and for entertainment applications such as gaming, video streaming or even viewing DVD ’s on your display through your computer.

You should also look into Dell's monitor, the 17/19 LCD might be in your price range, and they might be cheaper. Like I said look around for coupons, you can get a 25% off code if you look hard enough. Or you can try to play Dell's Dellf game. And you can add a sound bar to the monitor, cool shit I must say.

I say go with 172x for the low response time. The other monitor listed have 20-25 ms response time, not good for watching video, dvd, or gaming.

If you're gaming, stay with CRTs unless they have like 2ms LCDs. I ended up going back to my 19" for CS:S, HL2, etc since to run 1600x1200 on the 20" Dell and get good frame rates... is impossible lol. I guess I'm just more picky about refreshrates than the normal smuck.
But since you are going to be playing games where fps dont matter, get a projector + free wall + surround sound setup + curtans for the windows. Seems like everyone down in FL has that setup.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X & 173P LCD's
http://www.explosivelabs.com/reviews/samsung_172x&173p/
The Samsung SyncMaster 172X's main feature's are its 12ms response time...
On the other hand we have the SyncMaster 173P. For those of you that are not aware Samsung's "P" series of LCD's were designed by Porsche... However after not much success with this line, simply because of high prices, Samsung had to ditch the Porsche designed LCD's. They do now still offer "P" series LCD's but they are no longer designed by Porsche.
Way for telling me nothing useful about the P series on the first page!
Edit: After reading, the 173P sucks.

I've decided to get the 8ms 300nit 700:1 1280x1024 Samsung SyncMaster 915N Black 19" LCD Monitor for under $400
I know I really wanted 1600x1200, but this should hold me over for the few years until 23" 1600x1200 becomes cheap enough.

Do any of these LCDs come in a 'hang on a wall" form factor? Because Amber wants to hang an LCD on the wall above the computer desk and I think it is a great idea.

I think you can remove the stand from most LCD's these days and just wall mount them... I'll let you know if it's possible with this particular LCD when I get it next week (I didn't spend the extra $40 for overnight shipping).

I've actually looked into the 915N (
samsung |
newegg ) a little, however the lack of a DVI input annoys me.
This is the latest article I've read on it:
8ms 19" LCDs: Speed for Gaming, but at What Cost? (
Tom's Hardware, yeah, I know )
in which the Hyundai L90D+ is very tempting. However, I've recently been annoyed by 1280x1024 native resolutions, since they impose geometric distortion due to a non-standard aspect ratio. That latter problem has been bugging me for months...

I've been using 1280x1024 a lot and it doesn't bother me at all. I think you're just picky.

same here, my old LCD has 1280x1024 native. actually I think my work monitor is also using 1280x1024.

Now that you mention it, all my monitors are set to 1280x1024.

Perhaps I am too picky.
At work I run 1280x960 and at home I still use good ol' 1024x768 (monitor is set far back). Both are 19" monitors (~18" viewable).
Then again, I'm one of the weird people that can tell the difference between 72 Hz and 85 Hz refresh rates as well as notice tearing when watching anime on old LCDs (due to slow response times).

I can tell the difference in refresh rates too, but I won't see tearing if I'm not looking for it.
