I'm in the IGDA*. My renewal is coming up soon too. Damn. Students only have to pay $35, but I think now I have to pay about $150. I think the companies tend not to pay for memberships, because nobody's required to join or gets any tangible work benefit from it. Just the magazine, the meetings, and certain perks at conferences.

*International Game Developers Association. Not the International Gay Dogs Association, which George is a member of.

I was thinking about the actuary designation, but than I got lazy and moved to a different department. That's a good question though. I should ask my boss if they would pay for ACM and IEEE computer membership.

I know Argon sponsors IEEE membership if I so desire it, but I'm not sure about others. I'm fairly confident they would pay membership fees for any other organization as long as I had a half-decent reason for it.

Paid for by the grad school?

I'm not a member of the Association of Computing Machinery. It's definitely a purely academic organization. I have been to an ACM conference though, but for students there was no discount for members.
