Hmm, for cheap customization oportunities, your best bet is cars. You don't have to go the rice route. Buy some beat up, old, piece of crap that barely runs and rebuild engine, transmission, etc. You'll learn a lot, it'll impress more people than any computer, and it can be done cheaply if you're flexible. I can't do it now, because I don't have a garage, but someday I'd like to try rebuilding an engine.

If you're still against cars, consider other things with engines. Motorcycles, boats, ATVs, hovercraft, experimental aircraft (if you're suicidal), etc. Engines are kind of the quintessential tinkering item. The problem is that anything other than cars, and maybe motorcycles will be expensive.

There are lots of other hobbies that don't exactly involve customization, but can involve lots of accessories, which may be acceptable as well. Fishing, golf, hunting, bicycling, astronomy, home theater, photography, amateur radio, hobby electronics, any type of collecting, sewing, meteorology, archery, painting or sculpting, machine shop, carpentry, and furniture-making. I'm sure there are others, but that's as many as I could think of off the top of my head.

Actually, the nice thing about a machine shop is that you can build most of you tools yourself once you have a couple basics. Half of what you do with the shop is just build more tools. My dad has a milling machine he inherited from his father, and he's just recently gotten into playing around with his shop in general.

Or, you could just buy and customize an AR-15 (civilian M-16 clone). No self-respecting AK or AR owner would consider that the same hobby as buying and customizing an AK.

I think you should take up writing. Begin by studying How to Good-Bye Depression.

(edit: f*in' auto close-tags after I already closed it...)

I'm considering going the woodworking route. One of my coworkers goes to this community center which has all the woodworking tools you could need. I think he's making a nightstand at the moment and I helped him haul the wood when he first bought it. I think I'm going to take the course offered at the community center before I start building anything. I have to wait for the spring however since I don't have time with the grad courses.

This is semi-related to this thread.

You can't do cycling. I've already taken that. Well, I don't really customize the hell out of my bike, but I do work on it to make sure it's in top condition. Today I replaced the chain, which fucking EXPLODED last night when I was just starting off for home.

Maybe I should start customizing it, with some underglow neon, a built-in stereo system, and stuff like that. I could rice up my bike! Oooh yeah! Fast and Furious on two wheels! With no engine! Mmm... hydraulics.

I think my problem is that I lose interest too fast. there are quite a few things I wanted to do, but after a week I would find some new things I want to do and forget about the other one.

Ah, then you need hobbies that have little or no equipment, so that when you move on, you won't have wasted any money.

Heh, I just thought of a great source of ideas for hobbies. Ultima Online. Have you considered mining, chopping lumber, fighting or training squirrels, or mixing chemicals to make potions?

Unfortunately, Peijen might be called a terrorist if he does any of those things, especially mixing chemicals...

Hmm, I can't see trained squirrels being an effective terrorism tool.

And I was thinking more of drugs than explosives with the chemicals things. Apparently there are a lot of ecstasy labs in the Arkansas wilderness.
