missing audio codec

I have a bunch of episodes of The Tick. Many of them were probably encoded in like 97 or some other ancient-ass time ago. On a lot of them, I can't get the audio stream to play. When I try them in WMP, it says "Downloading codec" and does something, but it never actually plays the sound. They're all in MPG or AVI format.
Any suggestions on how to play these episodes with sound? I'm specifically looking for either a media player that's smarter than WMP or a way to figure out how the audio was encoded so I can hunt down the right codec manually. Any idea welcome, though.

Most of your problems can probably be fixed here:
http://www.doom9.org/
(via the downloads page, can't direct link)
- First off, use windows media player classic. You'll thank yourself later
- Next, you probably want the ffdshow and ac3 filters
- Install vobsub if you need subtitles
ffdshow should handle your ogg problems (if they exist). Otherwise you need to hunt down ogg codecs (blerg)

Have either of you been to Doom9 recently? I can't seem to find the 'audio filters pack' that I downloaded before.

I haven't been to Doom9 since the advent of CCCP.
Here's the wiki + download link:

It's essentially the universal video/audio codec panacea. Go go zealous anime fans!
Btw, the people in #
CCCP@irc.chatsociety.net are knowledgeable and update the wiki quickly (
the LPCM entry was prompted by myself).
Interesting Links:
Just FYI:

CCCP Wiki wrote:The VLC media player is a network-transparent video/audio player with all codecs built in. As such, it is useless to use with CCCP.

What exactly can the CCCP play?
A lot of things... but remember that the goal of CCCP isn't to support EVERYTHING (that'd make us into ACE Mega Codecs Pack), but to support sensible anime releases. ffdshow can decode more video formats than listed here, but most of the formats are turned off with the CCCP default settings.
Unfortunately, I don't need support for sensible anime releases. Apparently ACE Mega Codecs Pack is an actual thing:

Hmm.

In "most" cases you just want the AC3 filter... Also, ffdshow tends to create more problems than it solves, so turning off most formats in ffdshow is probably a good thing. In the end, you probably do want that anime pack since anime tends to be encoded similarly to your everyday dvd's.
