Get your email from Google. 1000 MB of storage, anyone?
Sweet Jesus. I think it goes without saying that I'll be getting one as soon as they're available.
Woohoo, I just got a gmail account!

A friend / co-worker was in the beta already because a friend of his works for Google.

So beta people can get other people accounts? If so, Amber wants one.

Well, I guess I didn't exactly answer how I got the account. Google gave every beta tester 2 invitations to give out to expand the gmail beta some more. I was the recipient of one of those invitations.

My first invite or two is already promised to more of my co-worker's friends since he was nice enough to give me an an invite. I'll try to invite the rest of you when I can.

Ok, I've played around with gmail some. It's different from normal mail programs. Mail is not sorted into folders. Instead you can associate zero or more "labels" with each message. If a message is in your inbox, it's only because you haven't archived it yet, so in a sense, they have an "unarchived" label. There's a special label called a star with which you mark important messages (go figure). Basically, assigning a label to a message is like putting a message in a folder except that you can assign multiple labels to the same message so it can be in multiple folders at once without actually duplicating the email.

Gmail supports filtering as you might expect. You don't filter to special folders, but instead filter by assigning a flag, automatically deleting the message, or auto archive the message. The only problem is that you cannot assign multiple flags to a message with one rule. I'm not even sure you can have multiple rules act on a single message. They are still working on a spam filter but I expect it will be similar to what Yahoo! and other webmail providers do at first.

The interface is pretty slick, but you'll need a little bit of time to orient yourself. There are some cases in which you might think (because the tab is visually connected to the window you're working in) you'll get more options by clicking on a link, but it's really not related to what you're doing. I'm sure these things will be cleaned up thought.

The ads are unobtrusive on the side of the window like the text based ads you get when you use google search. They don't blink at you or pop up windows or anything else obnoxious.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. If you have questions, ask.

One more thing I forgot, Gmail supports hotkeys like to move to the next older and next newer messages, open a message, etc... I'm sure Vinny will like that.

you people should send me email so I can better understand how gmail threads messages and such. you know the username (hint, same one as my andrew account) @gmail.com

Besides, it'll help cure my boredom.

users may not:
Promote or encourage illegal activity
Use the Gmail Service in connection with illegal peer-to-peer file sharing
Geez, they take all the fun out of having a 1 Gig email quota

Is there an email address you want to PM me for Mrs. Pearce? I'll give her the account I just got on the condition you don't somehow tell my friend that you don't even know.

Basically, is there anyone who would really need or like the increased storage offered by a gmail account. Also, I would expect that at least one of the first invites given would be passed along to someone else on this bboard. Also, I'll likely get more invites to hand out in a couple weeks, so no one should be left out.
