computer hardware (you know, for kids*)

Post by Jonathan »

2017-04-25 update with SSD

2017-04-29 update with case, PSU, mouse, HDMI

Code: Select all

$113.00 Crucial 16GB Kit (4GBx4) DDR4-2133 UDIMM Desktop Memory
$231.80 Intel® Core™ i7-7700 Processor + GA-H270M-D3H Motherboard
$250.00 ASUS DUAL-GTX1060-O6G
 $90.00 Intel® SSD 600p Series (256GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x4)
 $44.90 Seasonic S12II 520 BRONZE, SS-520GB Power Supply
 $24.76 A4tech X7 F5 V-Laser Wired USB Gaming Mouse Mice
$49.99 Cooler Master N200 - Mini Tower Computer Case with Fully Meshed Front Panel and mATX/Mini-ITX Support
$11.89 GE® 4ft Gold High Speed Connectors HDMI Cable - Black
This is the core of the machine I'm thinking about building. It is modest in displacement and power consumption. The GA-H270M is a Micro ATX form factor, so I need a corresponding case+PSU. I also need an M.2 SSD. My rotational media is on the network and thus won't be in the box. I'll probably get a mouse because I hate my current mouse; I might get a keyboard or I might skip it. I need an HDMI cable.

What am forgetting? A quick glance at what I assume is the last thread reveals:
  • HSF: It's a 65W part (no 'K'). I'm going to use stock and it'll be fine.
  • OS: I have a thumb drive with 16.04 on it. Is 17.04 a thing yet?
  • Monitor: 1080p ought to be enough for anybody
  • Speakers: I have an old 80s amp I plug my speakers into. It's kind of shitty. An amp that accepts S/PDIF would be suuuuper sweet.
So, any SSD or mouse recommendations?

*As far as I'm concerned, this is the Dad edition of the Mohtalim hardware thread, not the 2017 edition. Presumably, the next version will be the midlife-crisis edition and will feature Ferrari red boxen.

What are you gonna do with this machine? Just browse the web? Why not just get a tablet?

Optical drive for blu-ray?
Card reader/usb(3/c)/esata port box for the front of the system if not built into the case?
Are either of those even still a thing?

How is this a "Dad" box if you don't even have kids!

Don't you use an array of 30" monitors at work? I swapped to a 2560x1440 at home and wish I had 2x of these at work. As for Hz, I game and really couldn't say if going from 60hz to 144hz did anything for me.

Yes, for work I need pixels. I wish I had more pixels at work.

At home, I just want it not to drop frames.

I demand more threads in the Games forum. I refuse to read the "Heroes of the Storm" thread and not much else has been going on there...

Plus, can't you afford a 1080Ti x2? I'm poor using still 2011 HP computar!

I was going to make some comment about how you haven't grown up yet since you're still living in an apartment, but you're a hipster in Portland, so it's kinda redundant.

Yeah, a sucker with $440k more in equity now than when I bought it and a yearly tax deduction that makes it cheaper than renting...

The tiny SSD came back in stock in the Intel employee store so I jumped on it.

I often find that enough WinOS cruft and game cruft builds up in a year or so that having only 256GB isn't enough. One major culprit on windows machines is itunes if you have an iphone... It want's to put backups in AppData and the workaround I use now rather than messing with the registry is to use a hard link to point to the backups on a different drive. Backing up A 128GB phone takes a significant portion of 256GB oddly enough and multiple phones/tablets makes it worse. I wonder what your experiences in linux will be when living with just a 256GB drive.

My current SSD is 80GB. Video games are the problem, not Ubuntu. I can't have Heroes and XCOM installed simultaneously right now.

I definitely wanted the 512GB drive, bit it's still out of stock.

I forgot an HDMI cable so I got one from Target. Am posting from 17.04 Ubuntu on new machine 'nofucksgiven'. Everything worked first time. Yay.

My Dell 2408WFP (24") finally kicked the bucket. Purchased in 2009 for $425! :|

(Was replaced for my main PC in 2016 with a Dell 27" because I'm poor)

Huh, maybe Kevin Hart ripped off your machine name when naming his new comedy special? His version is more engineery/precise replacing no with zero.
