Party games

Post by Jonathan »

Alright, gents, time to throw down. Lately, I've been finding more opportunities to play board games with folks. These events tend to be more social rather than serious grognard gatherings. Significant others are involved. Nerdy, nerdy significant others, but still. No Diplomacy.

What are some good games? So far we have got Settlers, Boggle, Dominion, Trivial Pursuit, Flux, and Munchkin.

I haven't played it yet, but I hear Apples to Apples is great.

If you like Dominion, Thunderstone is similar and very fun.

I still play Race for the Galaxy against the AI many times a week.

For more involved games, I've enjoyed Android, the Battlestar Galactica board game, and Arkham Asylum (which is co-operative).

Played Carcassonne, which didn't grab me. Then played Trans America, which I liked. (lost the first, won the second.) Internet says Trans America is best with 5-6, though it seemed perfectly fine with four. I am wary of trying three.

Cranium and Taboo are always good.

And of course drawing games are usually hilarious. You can even make it up. Go to IMDB and find all the semi-risque names of movies and write them down on cards and see what people come up with.

RISK!
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

Maybe this will help?

... Or not.

MAO could be fun for a while... Especially if taking a drink along with drawing penalty cards is added.

Inspired by Joe's last suggestion: http://xkcd.com/696/

Others have beaten me to all the games I would have recommended (Fluxx, Race for the Galaxy, and Settlers). I can recommend against Advanced Civilization. It's somewhat fun, but probably not what you're looking for. The only times I played, we all had to bring laptops to run home-brew tracking software because the rules were too much for any human to manage.
I feel like I just beat a kitten to death... with a bag of puppies.

I'd say there's a high correlation with shorter typical length of game to frequency of a strip version being google'd (young children's games excluded for obvious reasons)... I wonder if there's a version of strip RPS (not gonna search for that from work :-p)

It seems to be that if a game takes more than a day, then it's not considered at all.
