I am pretty sure I got a spam friend request, though facebook won't show me the profile. Possibly it was in the middle of deleting it. Anyway, is this common?

Yes. They have a way of reporting it.

I checked a little while later and the request was gone. I wonder what kind of system they have that they needed some wall clock time to make the determination whether a request is bad or not.

Remember Friendster spam? That was the best.
