Chuck's New Rig

Post by VLSmooth »

Here's the Newegg wishlist with most of the components (newegg)

From heatsinkfactory, buy these:Should add up to $201.16 before shipping & handing.

He already has the keyboard, mouse, monitor covered.

Looking @ ~$1400 right now.

Posting for great justice! (and public scrutiny before purchasing).

Edits:
  • Removed Solo, sticking with the P182 case
  • Added ASUS optical drive
  • Added after-market video card heatsink and fan
  • Added approximate cost for heatsinkfactory.com purchases
  • Added approximate total cost
  • Miscellaneous formatting updates
  • Replaced the Asus X38 motherboard with the Gigabyte P35 motherboard
  • Replaced EVGA GTS with BFG GTS
  • Upped the number of slipstream fans (miscounted mounts)
  • Revamped heatsinkfactory portion

Ow. Why a $240 motherboard? That's a hard one to justify price-wise.

I've been trying to get away from the $300+ video cards myself, though that's a personal choice. The going has been tough (*cough* $250 video card not much cheaper *cough*). I'll be working on that for a few upgrades, methinks.

Also, there are currently 3 mail-in-rebates (MIR) for $50, $20, and $20 for an additional $90 in savings.

Oops! That was an oversight. I'm glad I posted now :)

Added the best-rated DVD burner, an ASUS drive.

Also, I'd recommend a Thermalright after-market video card heatsink, but I'm not 100% sure the Thermalright HR-03 GT fits the new G92-based cards. If I can confirm that, I'll add the heatsink and a 92mm fan to go with it.

Aha, it does work!

I'll add the heatsink and fan soon.

If you're not going to buy a new monitor for this rig, I'd downgrade to the 8800 GT. There's no reason to pay for the GTS on a 19".

PST is three hours behind EST. It's 10:26pm here. :)

As a heads up, he was prepared to spend up to $2000 (~'.')~

Regarding the video card though, the GTS is the sweet spot to me, but I understand the monitor limitation. As a compromise, I recommend Chuck buy me a 3008wfp and he can take my 2405fpw.

Since Chuck asked, here's a link showing some of the G92 GT and GTS differences (note, only look at the G92 data).

Also, since Chuck wasn't familiar with Crysis (ie. the game that makes computer's cry), here's a random tech demo.

I just had break time with the techs! We watched Cops. It was a truely awesome moment.

Get Vista. It has an awesome screen saver.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

For a comparison of the GT and GTS price-wise, currentlyFor $20 more, I'd get the GTS.

Wow, that is nice. Volumetric clouds are pretty. Now if only I didn't have school and stuff to do :-( I guess I can wait another year or so until I can afford to get a new system to play it.

Cheater. The other thread has a GT for $230.

I stand by my original analysis. The video card is a personal choice, but I think you're overpaying for motherboard.

I saw this on slickdeals today...dunno much about mobos...just browsed the reviews...for the asus board people seem to complain about the bios?...for the abit board...people complain of random funkiness and it dying randomly...thoughts anyone?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813127031

the rebate ends on 1/31 for the abit one though plus it's supposedly a hot item that sells out quickly
