these flash memory portables seem pretty slick:

has anybody had any experience with these? you can get a portable MP3 player thats cheap enough that you can take it out without constantly worrying about it getting stolen. 128 Megs should be plenty of space as long as transferring songs onboard is effortless.

I had an RCA Lyra 1080. At first it sucked because of its requirement that mp3 files had to be changed into proprietary mpy files in order for it to play them, but they released a firmware upgrade recently that finally got rid of that silliness. The nice thing about them is that they have a slot for a SD card. You can get a 512 meg card for about 50-60 dollars these days, which is less than the cost of the player. Oh, another bonus is that they have a built in AM/FM radio. There won't be any extremely fancy features like you'll find in an iRiver propduct though.

I've had an iRiver mp3/cd player and it was pretty slick. iRiver make pretty nice stuff in general, so if you want to go that direction, you won't be disappointed.

I have one of the iRiver mp3 cd players, and its annoying loud in a quiet area like pc cdroms sometimes, or even on the plane. I also had a wussy 64MB mp3 player, it was really small and held about a cd-length worth of songs. Problem is getting tired of those songs too fast (64 mb), or the order in which they are played (mp3cd). If I get another mp3 player, it will probably have to be able to store a few GB of songs.

or a free ipod!

Amber has an mp3 CD, a Rio Sport 128 MB, and a 15 GB iPod. She only uses the iPod any more.
