Rock Band

Has anyone else tried it?

After playing it on and off for 4 days, it's pretty damn good imho.

Okay, how does one link urls with parentheses again?

There you go. It should just accept parentheses since they're allowed to be unencoded as part of the spec for URL's. Apparently phpbb doesn't like specs.

Quick Notes
  • Lead Guitar - awesome
  • Bass Guitar - don't know, didn't try
  • Drums - very fun, but very difficult and the most exhausting
  • Vocals - medium to hard, and some females hit VERY low notes
I was consistently able to do medium on most songs for lead guitar, could do medium for some songs on vocal, had to stick to easy for drums. Luckily, two of us could usually do medium on vocals and drums.

IIRC (if I remember correctly), Train Kept A-Rollin' kicked our asses on medium :x (drums and vocals would die horribly and the guitar couldn't save them).

Correction on "most", apparently we only unlocked about half (maybe less) of the standard (non-downloadable songs).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_in_Rock_Band

Train Kept A-Rollin' is tier 9,8,7,8,5, which partially explains why it destroyed us.

Funny, I though my music tastes were drifting back towards the mainstream. However, I only used to listen to four of the groups on that list, and only still listen to two. Maybe they figured croaking German vocals for a Rammstein song would be too hard.

I broke my guitar, need to get a new one.

But yeah I play this game too much. I can play all the songs on guitar on expert except Green Grass and High Tides (I die midway or so into the second solo, the one that lasts like 5 minutes), can sing most of the songs on Expert, and can play everything but the last 5 or so songs on drums on expert. Run to the Hills for drums is crazy. So is Next To You.

Yeah so I play way too much. Haha. The World Tour mode is amazing though.

Download the Oasis pack. Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger are awesome especially for vocals...if there's one thing the game needs it's more vocal-friendly songs.

Nice!

If you're not past your warranty (no clue how long it lasts) I heard EA (?) is really good with Rock Band instrument exchanges.

Also, you probably already know, but "The Perfect Drug" is in the 2008-03-18 NIN pack. Drums for that should be insane...

Just FYI, if you're playing on PS3, the stand-alone PS3 guitar isn't coming out until April 1st :/ We got burned by that last weekend, hence we only had 3 player.

I got the date wrong

It was this week's (2008-02-26) and apparently even AnandTech reviewed it

(the above is a ~30 second clip of the song hosted by AnandTech)

Difficulty: Ridiculous. This song is in 4/4 and I couldn't for the life of me get by it on Expert. Anand got tired of me trying and I actually had to bump it down to medium to finally pass. This one is like playing chicken with a drum machine on acid. No, I don't really know what that means, but that's what its like anyway. The beginning isn't that bad, on either guitar or drums. The middle of this song is some of the most insane stuff I've ever seen in Rock Band. Not because it's fast or because it's in a strange time signature, but because of how all over the place and staccato some of it is. It does settle down at the end, but if you've made it that far, not getting up to jump for joy will be tricky in and of itself.

Experience: The beginning of the song is very fun and straight forward for drums, bass and guitar. After that it was fun, but very technical. If you like a challenge, then this one has a lot to offer. This one is also the longest song of the day, which is a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. This one is really very fun unless you get frustrated easily.

Summing it up: Buy the Pack or Just a Track?

All in all, this is a great pack to grab. Our thoughts are that these are more fun to play as a group than solo, and the frenetic pace of The Perfect Drug to the crazy time signatures of the other two will really be fun with some friends. If you can only pick one and you don't mind a challenge, I'd recommend The Perfect Drug. Other wise, the other two are great picks and you really can't go wrong. For what is is worth, we recommend going with the whole pack on this one.

Someone already five-starred it on expert and posted it to YouTube...

... that's just wow.

I also noticed the foot pedal at ~2:15 looks evil with a ton of really close bass hits.

For those not familiar with Rock Band drum playing, here are three well-pieced videos showing the chart (notes), the drums, and the star level simultaneously.

Run to the Hills: Expert: 5 star: 2007-12-13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7Bk8kb7Pow
I now see why Alan calls this crazy. So many rolls...

Blackened: Expert: 5 star: 2008-01-20
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uArm61wmrI
This also shows the bass pedal and showcases the (infamous?) sock mod to reduce vibration to better hit fast notes.

===== Edit: VLSmooth: had to add this version
===== Full Expert Rock Band - Blackened 1.8 million
===== http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cSAfhRyrIQ

The Hand that Feeds: Expert: 5 star: Fully Complete (FC): 2008-02-09
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OXwplXZO-M
This also shows the bass pedal, which is modded with a metal covering.

From http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 836AA1nn0B
Adrian wrote:In Rock Band, when people say FC what does that mean?

Fully Complete.

All power ups, every note, and full note streak.

If you play and you strum accidentally where there is no note and reset your streak, but dont miss any notes in the song, you would still get 100%, but this would not be Fully Complete as you would not have the complete note streak.
All these songs look insane, but at least more regular that Perfect Drug's crazy changing rhythm.
