Getting the facts straight on avian flu:
There's a bunch of avian flu variants. The aggressive one is H5N1.
20 cases of H5N1 infection have been confirmed by the CDC. Of those 20 people infected, 7 died.
In past pandemics, 25%-35% of the population was infected. In the 1918 pandemic, the mortality rate in the U.S. was 2.5%. Presumably that means that at least 10% of those infected were killed.

Apparently, the H1N1 which caused the 1918 flu pandemic is not a risk for a modern pandemic due to vaccination efforts.
