determining wifi channel

Post by Jonathan »

So, in my new neck of the woods, there are six other 802.11 signals. All of them are operating on channel 6 or 11, so thankfully my choice is a no-brainer. However, assuming that someone were to move in and set his router to channel 1, how do I pick the best channel? Are there any guides or rules of thumb out there?

I'm thinking in a sufficiently noisy environment, I might actually break out the in-between channels, but which ones (2, or 4?) and what's the threshold?

Do you have to set which channel you want to use on both the router and your wireless card/device?

No, you set the channel on the router and set the router's SSID on your client.
