Sil is a rogue-like by way of Angband that shares almost nothing with that game except the First Age Middle Earth setting.
It barely acknowledges its D&D heritage. HP does not increase as you level. Your character gains skills and abilities which make him a more able combatant, instead. Reminds me a lot of DoomRL.
Stealth is a first class mechanic. It is possible to level up and beat the game without attacking any enemies. I don't normally go for stealth in a rogue-like, but I find myself putting a couple points into it here. Very handy.
Very tactical and mercifully short, because you will die.
I like it a lot.

Re: Sil
The AI in this game is outstanding. The way combat works is I am much stronger than any given orc. I can generally take out an entire hallway of orcs with no problem. However, they call out to reach other and will attempt to encircle me. Being flanked makes your evasion go to shit and then suddenly you have problems.
Two thumbs up for making tactical combat out of push-over enemies. In this game I am constantly thinking about my escape routes and how much noise I am making.

Just got Majesty to make the number of rounds required to make an enemy flee with my Song of Elbereth lower. In fact, I made a Giant flee before me just by shooting him with my bow and then I sprint-charged him to death as he fled up the hallway. It's harder to kill the trolls because they have regeneration and my damage output isn't the highest. Anyway, Majesty/Song of Elbereth should be sufficient to handle the escorts of the next unique.
I think I'm aiming for Song of Staying next, which will give me even more of a outsize Majesty.

Re: Sil
Came back to this after a break.
I'm working a very similar build to my previous best, but with a focus on Archery instead of chasing. Archery is keen for murdering guys who are running away from you. I just need to take Point Blank Archery, because trying to keep up in melee is a fool's game.
The Balrog was a problem. So were the wraiths. The dragon hatchlings I successfully murdered, but at what cost in burnt up equipment? I killed several uniques, though, so apparently Legolas is Da Man. If I had had Rauko-Bane when I faced off with the Balrog and not been pincered by another demon, I might have made a stand. Would have been fun.
I finally died because I got into a hallway battle with werewolves and a shadow. I could hit them, but only with my bow, so I started just provoking opportunity attacks and got rocked for my efforts. I had earlier burnt up all my healing on the Balrog encounter and a shadow encounter, so I had no more healing left. I withdrew to the stairs, but some cave trolls I had scared away earlier parked themselves on it and got me.
Amulets of +0 stat sustain your stat. Extremely goddamn handy for fighting purple whatsits that drain Con or barrow wights that drain Grace. I think I will pursue a career as a Jeweler just to guarantee a decent supply.
The spear of light was super handy fighting Shadow beasts. More light is definitely required.
