The SKS was the semi-automatic predecessor to the AK-47. It corresponded roughly with the US M1. Various size magazines are available, including 5, 10, and 30 rounds. The cartridge is the same 7.62x39 mm that the AK uses. SKS's are fairly popular because they're really cheap ($150 or less) and semi-automatic, plus they can be modified to look more like AKs. Of course, I figure if you want an AK, buy one, but what do I know.
I will say that 7.62x39 is a crappy hunting cartridge because its trajectory is too curved and it doesn't have much power. Hunting deer with an SKS (or AK) screams poser.

I feel like I just beat a kitten to death... with a bag of puppies.

In 1990, ninety percent of the adult population identified with one or another religion group. In 2001, such identification has dropped to eighty-one percent.
The top three "gainers" in America's vast religious market place appear to be Evangelical Christians, those describing themselves as Non-Denominational Christians and those who profess no religion.
