Hilarious. Requires some knowledge of current IP law (especially as applicable to the SCO Group) to appreciate properly.

Thought-provoking article about the rise and (predicted) fall of video games. I'm not sure I agree with his premises, much less his conclusions, but it is an entertaining read.

I'd hate to see how he trained to do that stuff. That would be painful.

Yes, I know most people probably already know about this, but I found it incredibly hilarious (yes, I could tell from the title, I hope you can too).

Also see the Urban Legends page here:

and note it was updated on March 2004 8)

Study about violence in Teen-rated video games.

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/468087?mpid=25861
This study demonstrates quantitatively that T-rated video games contain a significant amount of violence, injury, and death. Given the large amount of violence involving guns and knives, the relative lack of blood seems surprising and suggests that many T-rated video games do not realistically portray the consequences of violence. However, as video game consoles evolve with more powerful graphics, T-rated video games have the ability to portray violence and suffering more realistically. We expect this trend to continue and that it will present challenges for content analyses and for the ESRB, which no longer uses the word "realistic" in content descriptors (eg, Realistic Violence, Realistic Blood).

Research that provides insight into the cognitive effects of video games on children of different levels of development should help determine the need to characterize the realism in video games. In particular, research related to when children distinguish between fantasy and reality[21,22] represents a priority, along with studies about what other media and social factors affect their development.[23,24] Researchers should also further study what children learn from video games and whether this learning changes their behavior, attitudes, and beliefs, while recognizing that understanding something as not real does not necessarily negate effects.[25]
Also, in the average shooter you'll be exposed to 270 deaths an hour.

For the impulse buyers out there:
NEC ND-2500A 8X DVD+-RW Black Dual Drive $92 one day only New Egg no rebates no shipping

Looks like a really sweet deal for those without a dvd-burner.

I have actually given a presentation on this at last summers Internet2 Joint Techs meeting.

At Carnegie Mellon, all students get globally routable IP addresses in the dorms. There are no filters on the traffic (except bogon filters that an respectable ISP should have to keep spoofed traffic from leaving a subnet).

We have a probe on our egress router that tracks daily inbound and outbound traffic sums per IP address. We have a policy that if a student exceeds more than 7.5 Gigabytes of traffic in either direction (calculated separately) over a 5 day period (1.5 GBs/day) they will get a warning message that reminds them of the policy. If after 3 days, they exceed 1.5GBs in one day, they get a warning, then 3 days later, if they keep on exceeding, we yank their machine off the network (block their ip on the router and take them out of the dhcp server config).

We used to do the message sending and yanking by hand. It would take about 2 hours per week of my time. Now it is all automated and takes no time.

Our rationale is that trying to do application policing is a losing strategy. It will not be long until the kazaas of the world are port hopping and encrypting their data, or encrypting the data and sending it over port 443. It is a losing game.

Heh, props to slide 25.

Random note: I fixed a friend's computer after he got a warning. He had a backdoor virus with 10+ gbs of disc images he never knew about -_-

Man, if you were to tell me that someday someone would slip 10 GB of data through a guy's system without him noticing, I'd have said you were an idiot. In another five years, we won't be able to find the Trojans because we'll have terabytes of disk and gigabit ethernet and a few GB of data will just get lost in the noise.

Self-crucifixion!
"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," said Lt. Pierre Boucher, adding it was unclear whether the man was seeking assistance for his injury or looking for help in nailing down his other hand.

Ok, after some quick investigation, I can't seem to find the rebates (not on http://www.rebateshq.com/ either).

Doh, guess we should let this one slide (the not-so-stellar CompUSA rebate reviews weren't flattering either).

Actually, looking at it closer, I think it's implied you pick up the rebates from CompUSA itself.

Disclaimer: This is a gamble, YMMV*

If you can spare the time, and need a hard drive, I recommend:
  • Going @~5 pm
  • Grabbing the drive ASAP, if OOS**, leave
  • Going to the rebate center INSIDE of CompUSA and grab the rebates if present, otherwise leave
  • Browse until 6 pm / get in cashier line
  • Purchase with rebates in hand
I'm not sure if I'm going yet, although there's a CompUSA ~1 mile from work...

* YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary
** OOS = Out of Stock
