It's interesting to look at the median household income distribution across the country and realize that the major cities are earning 2-4 times more than rural areas.

For gross income, that's a given. The median cost of living, or at least housing is much higher in most (thriving) urban areas. A more interesting statistic would be something like disposable income, or at least gross-(tax+housing+transportation). I speculate that urban might have an edge there, but I'm not really sure.
