Deal: SeaSonic X650 PSU, $125.99, free shipping, Newegg

Post by VLSmooth »

Summary: Awesome PSU for a great price.

Details:
  • Purchase Link: Newegg: SeaSonic X650 Gold 650W, currently $139.99.
    • Instant 10% off ($14) with promo code psu7211, ends 7/27, enter the code in cart
    • I just finished ordering it. It should be here in 2-4 business days.
  • Silent PC Review (spcr), conclusions page
spcr recommended PSUs page wrote:First 80 Plus Gold PSU with superb performance, totally modular cabling and unique DC/DC converter and output connector PCB offers fanless operation at lower loads and extremely quiet fan-cooled operation at mid-to-high power levels, with >90% efficiency at mid-power levels. Reviewed. Oct 18/09.
  • Camelizer: price graph
  • I've been watching the SeaSonic PSU and the Enermax Modu87+ 500W (spcr) for a while now to replace my Enermax Modu82+ 625 (mohtalim) which has suffered from the bad PSU fan mentioned here:
spcr wrote:WARNING! There are many reports from users of the fan in this PSU going bad (noisy, clicky) after just a few months use. Since the remarkable performance of the fan in our sample is a major reason for our strong recommendation, potential buyers are cautioned.
Of course, that warning didn't appear until months after I got my Modu82+. :(
  • Efficiency analysis: The new 80 plus gold-certified psu kicks the crap out my old PSU. Higher efficiency > lower bills & less heat > less cooling > less noise == win. Efficiency at crucial DC Output Wattages:
    • ~150W - new( 88.3% ) - current( 84.3% ) - delta( 4% )
    • ~200W - new( 90.8% ) - current( 85.9% ) - delta( 4.9% )
    • ~250W - new( 91.7% ) - current( 86.4% ) - delta( 5.3% )
    • ~300W - new( 91.7% ) - current( 85.4% ) - delta( 6.3% )
  • Rough electricity cost analysis (assume constant 250W usage, 24 hours a day, 30 days a month, $0.10/kWh):
    • 100% efficiency yields $18/month = (250/1000*24*30*0.1)
    • 86.4% efficiency yields $20.83/month = 18/0.864
    • 91.7% efficiency yields $19.63/month = 18/0.917
    • Electricity savings of $1.20/month
    • Sanity savings from less noise: effectively priceless
    • I really should get my Kill a Watt back from a friend for empirical numbers.
    • Random: PSU price difference = $125.99 - $79.99 = $46, cross-over point = $46/1.2 = 38.3 months = 3 years, ~2.3 months. However, I got a crazy $110 off my current psu ($30 instant, $80 rebate). If I just take off the rebate, the cross-over point becomes negative.

  • Sound-wise they're all awesome, as long as the fan works properly...

And now it's down to $119.
