The problem with Carl's Jr. in the SF Bay area at least is that their locations suck. I can get to a BK or McD easy. Both are within a block or two of my apartment. Even In'n'Out, Chipotle and Togo's are more accessible at locations on my commute home.

Despite their location crapiness, their menu is a bit confused as well, with teriyaki rice bowls, southwest style food, and burgers. I go to a fast food restaurant to get a specific type of food, not to be struck dumb by the variety of choices.

Until they solve these two issues, they're going to continue to lag behind other brands. It's all about location, location, location and consistency.
