The expansion includes a new DX9 engine.

In other news, today Eve launched their Linux and Mac clients. \o/

Alan, I can get you into UGH whenever you feel like coming back. UGH joined an alliance.

http://mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/1 ... ature/1555 - story of CCP's beginning

After reading this article I am astonished that Eve is not vaporware or a total flop. CCP was quite literally a couple of guys in a garage at first. They ran out of money. Their publisher actively hindered the game at launch.

War On The Impossible
As of last week, the game has 197,773 subscribers, up substantially from last year. It creates a growth chart that looks more like Google's stock price than the typical bump and decline most games see.

http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/pdf/QEN_Q3.pdf - Eve's first Quarterly Economic Newsletter

Does your MMOG have a resident economist? Didn't think so. :P

Lots of interesting info. For instance, half of all characters are newbs. One quarter have less than 10M SP (about 9months, give or take). The remaining quarter has more than 10M SP. This is really the thing that people who see this game and think, "I'll never catch up," don't understand. Most players aren't at the "level cap."
We found that 78% of all characters were located in high security areas (security status at 0.5 or higher), 13% were located in low security areas, and 9% were in 0.0 at the time the snapshot was taken.
In a universe with 430k characters, fewer than 40k fly in 0.0 space.

Old DX7 client will continue to function. New DX9 client will be schweet. UI getting a big overhaul.

The NY Times doesn't cover much new territory, but it does have this gem of a phrase (emphasis mine). I LOLed.
For at least a year the most powerful group in Eve has been an alliance known as Band of Brothers, a self-appointed evil empire with the stated objective of taking over the galaxy. Against them is arrayed a motley batch of self-styled freedom fighters with names like the Red Alliance (mostly Russian), Tau Ceti Federation (mostly French), GoonSwarm (mostly obnoxious) and the Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate (mostly drunk).

The Trinity expansion is launching December 5 and the patchnotes are available.

Some interesting selections from the patchnotes:
* more revisions to the new player experience: more interesting missions, better tutorials, contextual help, in-game recruitment, official in-game wiki
* buffs to the Interceptor ship class, which makes them super pwn tackling machines available to low-SP players
* new ship class Electronic Attack Frigates, which make them super pwn gang support machines available to low-SP players
* tweaks to the industrial side to make tech 2 ships and weapons cheaper
* shiny DX9 engine (needs >=6600 or equivalent ATI for Shader Model 3 graphics)
* voicechat is free and integrated into the fleet UI

Everyone should try the 14-day free trial except Alan, who should re-up for a month and see if he likes being in a real corp as opposed to being in a corp of only me when I wasn't logging in. :P
