Science says secondhand smoking kills people. Phillip Morris starts lots of "grassroots" organizations to discredit science, including casting doubt on global warming and harmful effect of pesticides. Later other companies such as ExxonMobil jump on the bandwagon.
This starts to sound vaguely criminal, though I'm not really sure what type of law they're violating.
