September 2005 Links

I think this article was really under-served by the /. post and following discussion. It's not a rant about how making games sucks at all, nor is it ignoring the efforts of indie game developers. Greg has a lot of specific data about what is wrong with the business model most games are developed under. A striking point is that the success of id would no longer be possible in 2005.

Make sure you read both
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/link/300 - what's wrong with the gaming industry and
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/link/301 - making a living from casual gamers

Among the top 20 contributors to open source packages by bytes of code are ID Software, Inc. and James E. Wilson & Robert A. Koeneke (authors of Moria, one of the original rogue-likes).

The second most prolific contributor as measured by number of projects contributed to is Gordon Matzigkeit, ahead of MIT and UC.

An unbelievable amount of stuff goes into a disaster kit. Looks too complicated. I think we'll just die.

Apparently, Firefox waits 250 ms to start rendering a page by default. Change this and other settings for a speed boost.

I love seeing these things that say make it easy to carry and then say pack a gallon of water per day. Maybe that's why people couldn't get out of N.O.; they were trying to carry 150 pound red cross compliant disater kits.

"George Bush does not care about black people" - text
http://movies.crooksandliars.com/Kayne- ... People.wmv - TV clip (sfw)

I don't really know who Kanye West is, but he is my new definition of awesome. Also, I like how they didn't cut away from him when he said whites are called foragers, blacks are called looters, and America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible." But say something bad about the President? You're outta there!

This is a pretty good summary of what Kanye was talking about: the way Bush has fucked our government.

Since Bush has been in office, poverty has grown by almost 9 percent. (Under President Clinton, poverty fell by 25 percent.)

If the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, then Bush's is convincing the poor to vote for him.

Rick Santorum is the biggest douche there is. I'm ashamed that he comes from my state.
Asshole Senator from PA wrote:And Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., suggested that the residents of New Orleans who failed to escape the flood should be punished. "I mean, you have people who don't heed those warnings and then put people at risk as a result of not heeding those warnings. There may be a need to look at tougher penalties on those who decide to ride it out and understand that there are consequences to not leaving."

This is odd. Have you heard of this? They have one item per day. After the day is over or they sell out, whichever comes first, they sell a new item.

This has been big on FatWallet for a while. The catch is that all the good woots are sold out by 12:01. I've heard that they had some good deals on speakers, among other things, but I've never been interested enough to try to get in on it.

Saw this on slashdot. I thought the article itself sucks, although the bulleted list halfway down gives me ideas for the next time I have to interview someone for a position. I really liked the first response, however.

What would you put in a Computer Science Curriculum?

References the "third of all study results don't pan out" story to draw the conclusion that science journalism is largely rubbish.

Not that I would buy this particular model, but I do think the relative attractiveness of a homebrewier PVR has gone way up since TiVo started sucking. Perhaps after Viiv has launched next year a decent Linux knockoff based on similar hardware will be available.
