porn to move to .xxx domain because it'll be easier to shield children from it? Yeah, right. I wonder if this could be a first step toward trying to segment and then regulate the web...
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) yesterday approved a plan for pornographic Web sites to use new addresses that end with ".xxx," something numerous groups and U.S. political leaders have been seeking to try to prevent sexually explicit content from landing on the screens of young Internet users.

Microsoft said it will use XML technology as the default file formats for the next version of its productivity software, Office 12.
They claim it's better for data recovery, security and interoperability. I like the last one. I HATE having to get data from an excel spreadsheet for use in scripted work flows, and now, it'll be easier! MS is actually doing things right for a change. Hopefully this'll lead to better *nix based clones of Office. Too bad this won't be ready for a few years still.

A motherboard that can run both AMD and Intel chips. Sound too good to be true. Well, it kinda is...
To switch to a new processor requires a little shuffling around of components and an additional plug-in board. This board can be thought of as half-motherboard.

The first thing you need to do is to pull out the Pentium 4 chip, then switch the graphics card from one of the PCI Express slots to the other one. Next, the memory needs to be removed and inserted into slots on one of the additional boards so it remains close to the processor and can maintain a high-bandwidth connection.

These boards are plugged into the PCI Express-like socket mentioned above and it's through that connection that they interface with the rest of the motherboard. To complete the switch, a new BIOS chip supporting the new processor should be inserted into the second BIOS chip socket.
So, yeah, it's like buying a segmented motherboard... It'd be much cooler if it could run both processors with different instances of windows, but off the same hard drive at least. Then a sorta built in KVM switch would allow you to switch back and forth between the two. But then again, why? I think it's USELESS.
"Normal users will not want to buy it because it's too complicated," he says. "But it's one solution [for running Intel and AMD systems] and it works."
Ya think?!
ECS is already selling the board and has seen some success in Europe, says Martin Grothe, a product manager with ECS' German subsidiary. He says the product has some appeal to specialist users who enjoy getting their hands dirty and building systems but says its not something for everyone.

The main board costs about $122 and the additional boards cost about $36 each, without the processors, says Grothe.
It's nice to know that if I invented a cool new version of Legos, they'd sell in Europe...

[A] study, now in its fifth year, found men use their phones 35 per cent more than women, spending 571 minutes a month talking on their mobiles, compared to an average of 424 wireless minutes a month for women. When the survey first started in 2000, men were only using their mobiles 16 per cent more than women, but the gap has grown year on year.
You might ask why this is since women generally talk more than men...
The study showed that the main reason for the male lead is the use of mobile phones as business tools, with twice as many men as women using mobiles for work. In contrast, 82 per cent of women use their wireless phones to talk to friends and family, versus only 62 per cent of men.
This seems to indicate an untapped niche in the wireless market, but I can't quite figure out how to exploit it... Anyone got any ideas?

You can already save offices file as xml in office 2003. Unfortunately unless other people have 2k3 as well you still have to save it as doc if you want to share it.

Another ban on selling violent video games to minors. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the "ban" on selling violent or sexual movies and comics to minors a voluntary, industry-enforced ban and not law?

As soon as I read the first article, I started scouting around for the inevitable second article. Also, my first thought was, "Bet that guy gets in trouble."

Interesting bit about globalization taking the iPod as a test case.

It is probably worth noting that American custom chip design is by no means dead.

Apple

I like how the story change from "nonsense" in previous week, to "maybe", to "we will know today". Only if they can come up with a gaming API to compete against DirectX.

He said he had been making $100,000 a month
Remind me again why doctors can't afford their insurance premiums?

there is hope for us lazy fat asses

Of course I would wait for the follow up research before I get excited over this. Sprint for 30 seconds is about 400 meter run, which is not an easy task either.

Getting pinged pretty bad ATM.
Today, Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) confirmed reports that it will shift away from using chips from IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ) and Freescale Semiconductor (nyse: FSL - news - people ) With the confirmation of the change, Apple is embarking on a transition that could well hurt its computer sales between now and 2007, frustrate software developers and ultimately drive loyal customers away from the platform. The news came in a speech by Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs at a software developers' conference in San Francisco.

He was probably an oral surgeon - but I don't think dentists in general have high premiums.

Most doctors (and dentists) make somewhere between $100k and $200k a year. Premiums aren't too bad for most except for surgeons and OB/GYNs. And relatively bad for rural docs, since they make like $30k-60k generally.

Neurosurgeons in PA are the extreme used to describe this situation: http://www.physiciansnews.com/cover/205.html
