Auto Chess

Post by Jonathan »

It's in the DOTA2 Arcade. It's free.

I've put about 9 hours into this game. I'm still not sure if it's good or not.

I think maybe that it invented a new genre which is good, without it itself being particularly good.

It's basically a PvP tower defense game with unique hero characters from DOTA2.

The system to connect you to a game is awful. The games themselves take too long, and the controls are mushy as fuck. You do not have enough time to shop and equip. It takes a real long time to lose, if you don't abandon the game. The matchmaking seems to keep the Knights and Pawns segregated from the rest of the players, but I'm not sure I see any further matchmaking rating in the server pop despite the wiki telling me otherwise (a Knight ranked player usually wins my games). The itemization is completely non-intuitive and very poorly explained.

Still playing, though. I like the tension of seeing my little dudes almost die but pull out the win anyway.

I'm really hoping this spawns imitators who do it right.

Here's my record. Really stuck at the lowest level of Knight (so effectively a Silver rank). Looking at my chess pieces played, I think it's because I play hunters too often. CC and AoE win games, but hunters just offer damage. It's really tempting to take hunter because most players ignore them. I just don't know how to combo them.

I've had success with troll/warrior build after seeing a streamer explain his preferred builds. I wonder if troll/hunter has anything going for it.

I also think I am undervaluing the 4 and 5 cost characters. You don't want to break a species/class bonus to add one, for sure. Right now, they're not part of my late game lineup but they need to be.

Apparently I've put 96 hours into DotA 2. I think probably over half of that is Auto Chess, not DotA.

Finally, someone made a clone of this game: Valve!

It's $10 for the battle pass to get access to the beta. Gonna watch some streams and decide if I can stop playing this shit game or not.

LoL also made a clone: Teamfight Tactics.

Early reports are it crashes under wine, so I probably won't be about to try it for some time.

I like the draft system. It provides some rubber band come back capability without the non intuitiveness of the loss streak bonus gold. I also like how there's a lot of answers to specific enemy comps in the item system.

The combat looks more like an actual team fight than the competition, but the ults are very drab.

Underlords takes Auto Chess and polishes off all the rough edges. TFT is trying to innovate in the genre. I hope they both succeed and steal ideas from each other like the battle royale games do.

Some news sites are calling the genre Auto Battlers. Kind of clunky, but no worse than MOBA honestly.
