The American dollar sign is derived from the abbreviation "ps" for pesos, which is the short version of "peso de 8 reales" which in English means "pieces of eight". So, in this narrowly construed sense, it's proper to abbreviate monetary amounts in Puzzle Pirates using the $ character.
