Hot Apps

Post by skanks »

What are the Apps people are using today for Windows?

my software profile leans towards open source, legitimately free software. I do not contend that any of these apps are hot apps (although TuneUp is almost windows necessity IMO).

Office App: Open Office
Browser: Firefox
Mail: Thunderbird
Anti-virus: Norton
Anti-spy: Ad-aware
De-crufter: TuneUp Utilies
Music: Winamp v5
IM: GAIM
Image Editor: PhotoShop
Illustrator: Adobe Illustrator
Bittorrent: Azereus
DVD decoder: whatever bullshit came with my system
Compression: WinRar
CD Burning: Nero
CD Emulation: Daemon Utilities
Pdfs: Acrobat Reader

also

Quicktime, not really sure why
Real Player for the occasional webcast
some DivX codecs
JAVA
Games

Google Desktop Search, I guess. I also use win32 xemacs.

I have been very pleased with iTunes as well.

I really can't think of the last brilliant piece of software I've seen.

Firefox+Thunderbird

MS Office 97 on one system because I have a real license, Open Office on the other two. I've been finding a lot of little features of Office XP (which I use at work) that I like, so I may eventually look into picking up a copy for my main system. I'm not very impressed by Open Office; it's just missing a lot of the nice little features that even Office 97 had, let alone XP.

Acrobat reader gets a lot of use because I have a lot of RPG books in PDF format.

Media Player Classic, DivX, and whatever Xvid codec I find first

QuickPar and QuickSFV, though I'm not sure they're actually related to one another. WinRAR obviously

Quicken and Money. I'm transitioning from Quicken to Money, but haven't gotten around to moving all my data yet.

XNews for binary newsgroup downloads.

Nero plus occassionally Alcohol, though fewer and fewer images seem to need Alcohol anymore.

Panorama32 (changes my wallpapers)
I feel like I just beat a kitten to death... with a bag of puppies.

Office 2k3. The ability to save office file as xml is great.

Let me know how it turns out, and which one you liked more. I am thinking about switch to Money as well.

I had Quicken 2002, but Inuit is exploiting a backdoor they built in to force users to upgrade. I'm not willing to upgrade, though, because all newer versions contain spyware, broke existing features, and apparently have severe bugs.

Money has seemed pretty clean so far. It supports at least one of my banks that Quicken didn't, and may support another. The downside is that it may require using a Passport to log in, which I'd really prefer to avoid if possible.

Also, the import wizard to bring in my quicken records choked and missed some number of transactions, since none of my accounts balance. I'm thinking of just starting from scratch. I do want to reenter my brokerage histories, but I don't really care that much about my bank or credit card activities.

$99, academic version, not like I am going to sale anything I wrote. I am trying to get the person in charge of software at my company to get their act together and figure out what they did with our MSDN subscription at work (they only give us the software). Because we are legally allowed to install one copy at home if we have a copy at work, and that's a lot of software (MSDN universal).
